Disney unveiled a blitz of new “Star Wars” projects, including 10 television shows — two of which will be “Mandalorian” spinoffs, another that will follow C-3PO and R2-D2 — and a new theatrical film, “Rogue Squadron,” directed by Patty Jenkins (“Wonder Woman”). Ms. Jenkins will be the first female filmmaker in the 43-year history of the “Star Wars” movie franchise.
That hasn't stopped Disney from embarking on more live-action remakes, and Pinocchio is the next to get the treatment. Disney's remake is not to be confused with the recent Italian live-action version starring Roberto Begnini, released in US theaters on Christmas Day. Guillermo Del Toro's upcoming remake is also a darker take on the tale that hews closer to the original version. Disney's version will likely copy the 1940 animated movie much closer, similar to how its other remakes have only updated some aspects of their stories rather than overhauling them completely.
Having grossed $1.1M in the UK via distributor Vertigo Releasing back in August from an English language version, that Pinocchio print will be booked at U.S. and Canada theaters versus a subtitled one. Garrone’s Pinocchio opened in Italy a year ago where it grossed $17.1M, repping 84% of the pic’s $20.4M WW box office to date. The movie also played this past year’s Berlin Film Festival.
The release plan echoes that of Mulan, Disney's most recent live-action remake, which was released on Disney+ with a premium access fee attached. That doesn't seem to be the case here, though, with Pinocchio set to be available to subscribers at no extra cost. Given the talent involved, that's something of a surprise and hints at Disney's release plans in the future. The live-action Peter Pan remake will also debut on Disney+, which means Disney isn't as confident its future remakes are individual box office hits like Aladdin, The Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast were.
